Five tourist attractions in Kenya must visit

Written by Andrew Matheka

Kenya is renowned for its spectacular wildlife and diverse landscapes, making it a top destination for nature lovers. Here are five must-visit game parks in Kenya

1. Maasai Mara National Reserve

Masai Mara game Park

The Maasai Mara is perhaps the most famous game reserve in Kenya, known for its annual Great Migration, where millions of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles cross the Mara River. The reserve offers excellent year-round wildlife viewing, including the Big Five (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros). The Maasai Mara’s sweeping plains and the rich culture of the Maasai people add to its allure.

2. Amboseli National Park

Amboseli Game Park
At the foot of the Kilimanjaro

Situated at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, Amboseli National Park offers stunning views of Africa’s highest peak. It’s famous for its large elephant herds and diverse bird species. The park’s open landscape also makes it easier to spot other wildlife like lions, cheetahs, and giraffes. The contrast of the snow-capped Kilimanjaro with the African savannah creates breathtaking scenery.

3. Tsavo National Parks (East and West)

Tsavo East
Tsavo west

Tsavo East and Tsavo West combined make up one of the largest wildlife sanctuaries in the world. Tsavo East is known for its vast landscapes and large herds of elephants often covered in red dust, while Tsavo West is more mountainous and wetter, with beautiful natural attractions like Mzima Springs and Shetani Lava Flow. The parks are also home to the famous “maneless” lions of Tsavo.

4. Lake Nakuru National Park

Pink flamingos
Rhino

Lake Nakuru National Park is a birdwatcher’s paradise, home to thousands of flamingos that create a striking pink fringe around the lake. The park also hosts a large population of rhinos, both black and white, and other wildlife like lions, leopards, and Rothschild giraffes. The park’s acacia forests and picturesque landscape add to its charm.

5. Samburu National Reserve

Leopard

Located in northern Kenya, Samburu National Reserve offers a unique experience with its arid landscape and rare wildlife species, such as the Grevy’s zebra, Somali ostrich, and reticulated giraffe. The reserve is also known for its lion pride that was made famous by the BBC series *Big Cat Diary*. The Ewaso Ng’iro River, which runs through the reserve, attracts a variety of animals and provides a lifeline in the dry environment.

These parks showcase Kenya’s incredible biodiversity and provide unforgettable wildlife experiences to the travellers.
